San Francisco bassist Marcus Shelby recently recorded a much-celebrated jazz suite called "Soul of the Movement: Meditations on Dr. Martin Luther King," featuring a 15-piece jazz orchestra. A remarkable collaboration between Shelby and the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, Shelby's opus will serve as the vehicle for a James Irvine Foundation grant that specifies the creation of a choir whose singers will come from the diverse communities of Sonoma County. The Healdsburg Jazz Festival Freedom Jazz Choir's purpose is to engage the public in the arts using music as a unifying force. Close to 150 people showed up for the first rehearsal of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival Freedom Jazz Choir. The singers, under the tutelage of Shelby and Adam Ivey, director of Santa Rosa's Joyous Noise Ensemble, will sing a variety of songs backed by the orchestra. The dynamic Ms. Faye Carol will be lead vocalist. The shows will feature original compositions from "Soul of the Movement," plus spirituals and freedom songs that Shelby has arranged for the choir.
Friday, May 17th, 5:30 p.m.
Friedman Events Center - Santa Rosa, CA.

Keynote speaker: Trevor Timm, Electronic Frontier Foundation Activist; co-founder and executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation

Fresh from the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Africa, surveillance drones are coming to America and law enforcement and private companies want them.

Drones’ threat to your privacy and what you can do about it is the subject of the keynote speech by Trevor Timm at the chapter’s annual event at the Friedman Event Center. Also, the chapter will present the Jack Green Civil Liberties Award to Mei T. Nakano.

Trevor Timm is an activist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. He specializes in surveillance, free speech and government transparency issues. He has studied and written extensively on the threat surveillance drones pose to privacy.

Before joining the EFF, Trevor helped James Goodale, long-time general counsel of The New York Times, write a book on the First Amendment. He has also worked for the former president of ACLU and at The New Yorker .

He co-operates the @Drones Twitter account, which reports on surveillance drones in the United States and the secrecy surrounding military drones around the world.

Trevor is also the co-founder and executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, which supports and funds independent journalism organizations dedicated to transparency and accountability in government.

Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York's famed Four Seasons Restaurant.
The idea for NEW was sparked by an article about people who pay thousands of dollars to have their bodies cryonically preserved (stored in liquid nitrogen) after death, in the hope that future medical technology will restore them to life. It was a fascinating look into people’s beliefs about mortality and identity, their attitudes about their current lives, and their plans to live another.

There are rules to life, the first of which may be "one to a customer." But imagine if technology were to change that rule, restoring youth and re-defining death. In NEW, this comes to pass. It poses some challenges for our main characters.

NEW will run roughly 12 minutes. The short film will stand alone as a story, but also serve as proof-of-concept for a feature film I'm writing now. NEW is ambitious, with multiple locations and some elaborate special effects. We plan a 7-day shoot, on cinema-resolution video gear (Arri Alexa or RED camera). Actors and crew will be paid a small daily wage, as we push for pro-level production values on every front. Your contribution will also help pay for costumes, props, some set construction, original music, special effects, and post-production (edit, color correction and sound mix).

"In writing NEW, I feel I've managed to hit a sweet spot between the visionary science fiction that fired my imagination as a kid, and the character-driven storytelling that makes sense to me now," says writer/director John Harden. "I'm thrilled to be making this film and feel it will be unlike anything I've done before."

"If we exceed our minimum goal, additional funds will be put to good use: NEW demands we create an immersive “future” environment. Extra dollars will only help. Beyond that, there are real expenses involved in submitting a film on the festival circuit, the primary avenue where a short film finds its audience."

"If you can make a contribution of any size, thank you. If you’re unable to donate, you can still help by telling people about our project. Please forward or post a link to our page, to anyone you think may be interested in what we’re doing. Thank you."
Writer/Director John Harden
John's work has aired nationwide on PBS and won awards at top-tier festivals around the world. You can see his complete bio here - http://www.usaprojects.org/user/johnharden.
The march begins at 4:30 pm and will go to Juilliard Park, where there will be a theater performance, music, and informational tables.
The Occupy Wall Street movement has awakened the US population to the economic disparity in this nation, following the uprisings in North Africa, the Middle East and in Wisconsin. OSR also joins the national call for a general strike. The events on this International Workers Day, Tuesday, May 1st, will create opportunity for the diverse community of Sonoma County to unite in solidarity for a just society.
Sunflowers for Santa Rosa

Want to meet your neighbors? Want to live in an awesome neighborhood and community? Want to make Santa Rosa an even better place to live?

Then plant sunflowers in front of where you work, play and live and watch your community grow!

A sense of community is one of the most important factors to our physical, psychological and social well-being. What better way to build community than spend our summer outside with our neighbors tending to our sunflowers?

A small (but mighty!) group of volunteers have started the Sunflowers for Santa Rosa project. Our goal is to bring neighbors and neighborhoods together by planting sunflowers in front of where we work, play and live.

We know we can't do it alone. We're going to need some volunteers to grow and distribute seeds and seedlings. We're going to need some volunteers to reach out to schools and get them involved by growing seedlings in their classrooms. We're going to need volunteers to contact businesses and nonprofits to get their organizations involved too. We're going to need some volunteers to help design flyers, put up posters, help with events, and round up some great prizes for our sunflower competitions!

Join us for our kick-off event on Saturday, April 27th from noon to 4pm for the Earth Day celebration at Court House Square! Bring your family, neighbors and co-workers to receive free sunflower seedlings and seeds!

We hope to find non-profits or businesses to team up with at the Human Race, the Rose Parade, Cinco de Mayo and other celebrations. And of course we need help with outreach. Do you know a service group that would like to help out? Maybe you have a contact at a Boys and Girls club or at a business in town. Any help you could be in spreading the word would be very much appreciated.

Now is the time to get in touch with me so that we can figure out how we can grow sunflowers throughout Santa Rosa. My email is jocohn@aol.com and my cell is 707-206-8489. I think that this will be a fun way to meet our neighbors and build community in Santa Rosa. I know that I can’t do it alone. It’s going to take a village. Give me a call so you can be part of the (sunny) village!!!

Wait there's more! Please LIKE us on Facebook at Sunflowers for Santa Rosa. (www.facebook.com/SunflowersForSantaRosa) ; And don't forget to ask your friends to Like us too!
Taylor Mountain Regional Park now open to public

The 1,100-acre Taylor Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve in southeast Santa Rosa is open to the public as of Saturday, February 23, 2013. Visitors no longer need permits to use the property, and the entrance on Kawana Terrace will be open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset.

A prominent Sonoma County landmark, Taylor Mountain offers sweeping views of Santa Rosa. From the park and preserve’s highest point of approximately 1,300 feet, visitors can see the Santa Rosa Plain, the Coast Range, Rincon and Bennett valleys, and the Mayacamas Mountains. The park also features oak forests, grasslands and wetlands and is home to grazing cattle and a variety of wildlife.

Since 2010, the public has had limited use of Taylor Mountain through an interim-access program provided by the District and coordinated by the nonprofit conservation group LandPaths. Those who attended a free orientation received a permit to use the property for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, acting concurrently as directors of the Open Space District, transferred the title of the land to Regional Parks, and with this opening, permits are no longer needed.

The park’s interim entrance is on Kawana Terrace, off of Kawana Springs Road just east of Petaluma Hill Road. Sonoma County Regional Park rangers will be at the park throughout the opening weekend to acquaint visitors with the property. Parking will be free for Regional Park members and $ 7.00 for non-members. Well-behaved dogs on leash will be allowed on trails.

Regional Parks will begin construction of the park’s first phase along Petaluma Hill Road this summer. Work will include trails, a natural play course, picnic sites, restrooms and equestrian facilities, which will be accessed from a parking lot to be constructed south of Yolanda Avenue. The work is funded by a $ 750,000.00 state grant and completion is expected by summer of 2014. Additional trails and features will be added to the park as funding becomes available.

Become a Docent!

Laguna Docents lead school groups in the Learning Laguna program as well as leading community groups on field trips and hikes in the Laguna. Our docents work with school districts in Sonoma County to bring 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students into the Laguna to learn about the wonders of this wetlands treasure in our own backyard.

Expert Training Program

Experts in biology, hydrology, natural history, cultural history and environmental education train docents in 10 lively sessions held on Mondays from March 11th to May 13th.Classes will be held at Great Blue Heron Hall at the Laguna Environmental Center. Each meeting includes presentations, discussion, and hands-on practice with the Learning Laguna activities, plus a fieldtrip to special Laguna locations. Classes generally run from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. Docents receive a binder with reading and reference material that is closely tied with the theme of each classroom session. There is $145 fee to cover the cost of the materials. Payments can be arranged and limited partial scholarships are available.

After training, docents are asked to make a two-year, minimum 40 hour per year volunteer commitment to the Laguna Foundation. During that time, docents are expected to participate in elementary school classroom and field trips each school season, Fall and Spring. Because the program is focused around the classroom, and school year, it requires that docents be able to schedule during school hours (7:30-2:30), Tuesday through Friday. Once trained, some docents are interested in leading community hikes and additional training is provided for those education events. Other volunteer opportunities are also available.

We invite you to join us!

Docent training for the Learning Laguna program is offered once a year from March through May. The 2013 training class is now forming!
The Art Center has moved to the Sebastopol Veterans Building, which doubles the size and allows significantly expanded programming – especially for children.

The new facility at the Veterans Building is inspiring the community and showcasing the arts in ways that we always dreamed would be possible.

The Phase 1 remodel of the 17,800 square foot building included upgrading the lighting and acoustics; adding air conditioning; and creating moveable gallery walls and new classrooms (for ceramics, painting, drawing, weaving and book arts.) Designed by Persinger Architects, the new art center has three galleries, a commercial kitchen, auditorium and stage, ample parking, rooms for community use, and outdoor space for sculpture. This is a dream come true!

We have $150,000 still to raise, to complete our construction Phases II & III, so if you'd like to make a donation, to help us complete the project we'd appreciate it.
