14th Annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival

June 1-10 - Healdsburg, CA.

The Healdsburg Jazz Festival will take the wine country by storm for the 14th consecutive year with a power-packed roster of jazz “Roy-alty” -- that's Roy as in Haynes, the legendary drummer and NEA Jazz Master -- and a bevy of veterans and jazz rising stars. The festival is proud to present for the first time, NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan, a unique vocal force in the music for over half a century. Healdsburg, which has never compromised its vision of presenting authentic jazz greats, continues this June with a lineup that includes another Jazz Master -- the peerless guitarist Kenny Burrell -- red-hot pianist Vijay Iyer and his trio that's the toast of New York; local jazz mover and shaker Adam Theis' Shotgun Wedding; the dazzling pianist Michele Rosewoman with trombone legend Julian Priester sitting in as special guest; suave, bluesy pianist/singer Freddy Cole; timbales grandmaster Orestes Vilato's brand-new trans-Latin group Azesu, featuring the beguiling Venezuelan singer Maria Marquez; a Dixieland superband led by Mal Sharpe; a Jazz Night at the Movies courtesy of Mark Cantor and his mile-deep cache of rare jazz footage; Northern California soul-jazz guitarist extraordinaire Calvin Keys; and lots more.

As usual, the festival matches the jazz with the area's most beautiful settings, such as Rodney Strong Vineyards, Barndiva restaurant, the Cousteaux Bakery, the town plaza and of course the Raven Performing Arts Theater.

With help from the very prestigious $10,000 NEA Jazz Master's Live grant to present Mr. Haynes and Ms. Jordan, the Festival will also be offering a couple of special programs. A Roy-al Family Panel Discussion featuring headliner Roy Haynes and his two sons, cornetist Graham and drummer Craig and other participants, will air out the limitless legacy of a drummer who has played with practically every significant figure in jazz history, from Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker to John Coltrane to Chick Corea. A Vocal Master Class led by the divine Ms. Jordan, open to singers of all levels, will reveal secrets she has stored since singing with Charlie Parker as a teenager.

Other treats abound at the fest. Try the late-night jams at the Healdsburg Hotel featuring Lorca Hart's juicy trio, or a wine tasting at Seasons of the Vineyard graced by the superlative Benny Barth Trio.

Come to the festival and soak in the magic that has made Healdsburg an annual mecca for jazz pilgrims who crave the real deal.

May 11th - 27th - Studio Theatre

For more than half a century the name Florence Foster Jenkins has been guaranteed to produce explosions of derisive laughter. Not unreasonably so, as this wealthy society eccentric suffered under the delusion that she was a great coloratura soprano when she was in fact incapable of producing two consecutive notes in tune. Nevertheless, her annual recitals in the ballroom of the Ritz Carlton hotel brought her extraordinary fame. As news of her terrible singing spread, so did her celebrity. Her growing mob of fans packed her recitals, stuffing handkerchiefs in their mouths to stifle their laughter which Mrs. Jenkins blissfully mistook for cheers. The climax of her career was a single concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944. Famously, it sold out in two hours. SOUVENIR, by turn hilarious and poignant, tells her story through the eyes of her accompanist, Cosme McMoon. Faced with her boundless certainty, Cosme comes to revise his attitude, not only towards her singing but to the very meaning of music itself. As the play ends the audience enters her world completely, finding there the beauty she'd heard in her head all along. SOUVENIR is a musical odd-couple for the ages.
Sonoma CounterPoints: The Economy

Hosted by the Sonoma County Commission on Human Rights
May 12th, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Friedman Center, Santa Rosa

The unemployment rate in Sonoma County is 9.5%. More than 14 percent of Sonoma County residents are without health insurance. More than 13 percent of Sonoma County residents are living in poverty. That's slightly more than one in eight people who call our county home.

What is being done, and what should be done, in Sonoma County to create jobs and reduce unemployment? Do you agree with the often-cited statement that “The private sector creates wealth and the public sector consumes it”? Do social values correlate with economic values? Does providing a Living Wage hurt or help the economy?

These questions and others will be discussed and debated by a panel of Sonoma County residents with differing viewpoints, from very conservative to very progressive and points between, at the inaugural Sonoma Counterpoints.

Panelists for the inaugural Sonoma CounterPoints will be:

Jack Atkins, President of the Sonoma County Taxpayers’ Association and founder of Landmark Properties & Mortgage Co.

Dan Hamburg, former congressman and two time Mendocino County Supervisor. Hamburg has worked for environmental and social justice, public financing of political campaigns, and single-payer health care.

Lisa Maldonado, Executive Director of the North Bay Labor Council, AFL-CIO. She has previously worked as a Political Director for the San Mateo County Labor Council and Field Director at the ACLU of Northern California. She is an attorney and has a JD from the University of San Francisco Law School.

Richard L. Sutter, Ph.D., former Director of International Programs for the California State University System, an academic administrator and Lecturer in Global Studies at Sonoma State University, and a retired U.S. Army officer. Presently, Sutter is a member of the Sonoma County Republican Central Committee representing the First Supervisorial District.

The forum will be moderated by Pamela Torliatt, former Mayor of the City of Petaluma and 14-year Petaluma City Councilmember.

Special guest speaker Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey will give an opening statement.

The event will be hosted by the Sonoma County Commission on Human Rights at 1 p.m. May 12th at the Friedman Center, 4676 Mayette Avenue, Santa Rosa.

Garden designer Maile Arnold will give a talk at 2pm at the Kissin/Smith Garden. Maile has had her gardens featured in Sunset Magazine; has been featured on a number of national television shows on gardening; and her garden has been toured by Garden Conservancy, and The Strybing Arboretum.

Do not miss this chance to visit private gardens, admire diverse plantings, and see a wide range of sculpture integrated into a living palette.

To buy tickets in advance:
- At Sebastopol Center for the Arts Tues - Fri 10am - 4pm or Sat 1-4pm.

Visit these wonderful gardens:

Sara Schomp – 501 Sandretto Dr.
Enjoy a colorful unique pool/cabana garden oasis with contemporary use of bamboo and corrugated metal in gates and fences. Sculpture by Sara, Beth Hartmann and Jane Lang.

Michael MacLean and his sister, Tamara MacLean– 452 Sandretto Dr.
Deeply wooded with a canopy of mature trees, vibrant rhododendron understory and a central glass house for orchid collection. Marble sculptures by Karen Ryer, water sculptures by John Christian.

Gale Kissin and JoAnn Smith – 854 Martin Ln.
A feel of the southwest, with crushed gravel paths flowing past oceans of meadow grasses. Lively plantings throughout. A sinuous wall embraces the fire pit and leads to long views. Sculptures by Robyn Spencer-Crompton and Peter Crompton. Garden design talk by Maile Arnold at 2 pm.

Ann Chambers – 8490 Occidental Rd.
Ann, a Master Gardner, has developed many garden rooms: one of natives, another dedicated to shade lovers, a food garden in apple boxes, and a trellis area with pipe vine, hops, and kiwi. This is home to Greencraft Studio, originator of “woven” wisteria and figs. Carolyn Horan will display her whimsical sculptures. And, stop by the Master Gardener's table to ask questions about plants, and receive handouts on free talks. Ask all your gardening questions here!

Jackie and Tim Reuling – 8600 Templeman Rd.
A mature English-style garden which reflects the joy of outdoor entertaining. Raised cinder block beds, sweeps of lavender and roses, surrounded by award-wining vineyards. Sculpture by Warren Arnold. Enjoy poetry in the garden at 3 pm.

Carole Lansdown – 5720 Pride Rd.
One has the feel of being in Europe here – the only garden of such design in our area. Focused on the well laid out perennial shrubs and trees, the garden includes: a tea house, green house, trellises, fountain, parterre, and pebble mosaics all designed by Carol. This garden is a sculpture in itself.

Kathy and Ted Klopp – 1855 Laguna Rd.
This very large garden, embraced by Klopp Ranch pinot noir grapes, has many areas to explore: perennial flower beds, veggie beds, a green house where starts are begun, unique container gardens. Metal sculptures by Susandra Spicer and Jan Schulz, and antique plantings by Theresa Joyce will be displayed.

Are you ready for Bike to Work Day 2012? Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition hopes to see you, your family, your friends, and co-workers out there in numbers on May 10th (and all month long), enjoying the many benefits of bicycling for transportation.

Don't worry if you're not working that day, you can still pedal to the store, to a softball game, to the movies -- anywhere you need to go!

To help entice you, our partners will set up Energizer Stations throughout Sonoma County to serve anyone on a bike coffee, snacks, good cheer, and our collectible canvas giveaway bags. Visit an Energizer Station between 6-9a.m., including our first-ever station in Guerneville, right downtown at Dawn Ranch Lodge.

After work, party with fellow bicycle people at a Bike Home Celebration. So far, there are parties planned in Sonoma, Windsor, and Santa Rosa. We're hoping to add a few more.

Throughout May, celebrate National Bike Month by forming a team of 5 and joining the Team Bike Challenge. Registration is now open.
Arnold is celebrating his 30th birthday, and everyone is invited!!

Sunday, April 22, 2012 - 11am-4pm

Arnold, our oldest resident turkey vulture, was rescued in August 1982. He was a first-year bird with a wing injury serious enough to prevent his release back into the wild. Since then he has been one of the star Ambassadors of our Education and Outreach Program.

To celebrate Arnold’s 30th birthday, all are invited to the Center between 11 and 4 to enjoy snacks and beverages, tour the new Ambassador Compound, and schmooze with Arnold and the rest of our resident raptors. We will also have a silent auction of a few pieces of original artwork recently donated to the Center.

Arnold is hoping we will serve his favorite, Carrion cake, but otherwise requests no presents. (However, a generous donation to BRC will help ensure an ample supply of mousies for Arnie and his many friends.)
Yom Hashoah Commemoration

Sonoma County’s Yom Hashoah Observance - Sunday, April 22, 2012

Europe was home to many vibrant Jewish communities before the Holocaust. Three such communities – then and now – will be explored through pictures, music and words at Sonoma County’s annual community-wide Yom Hashoah commemoration, “Remembering Home: Music and Memories of Our Lost Communities.”

The event, to remember those who died in the Holocaust, will take place on Sunday, April 22, 2 – 4 p.m. at the Friedman Center, 4676 Mayette Ave. Santa Rosa. It is free and open to the public. For information, visit www.jccsoco.org.

The program will feature authentic music, candle lighting by Sonoma County’s Holocaust survivors – each escorted by a teen, and a reading of the winning essay of the Susy Raful Student Essay Contest. Special yellow Holocaust memorial candles will be available for attendees for lighting at home.

The commemoration is co-sponsored by Sonoma County synagogues, the Jewish Community Center, Sonoma County, The Alliance for the Study of the Holocaust and Genocide, Remember Us: The Holocaust B’nai Mitzvah Project, the Jewish Community Federation/Sonoma Region, and the Jewish Community Relations Council/ North Bay Region.

Yom HaShoah is Hebrew for the day of the Shoah or Holocaust. Jewish communities around the world hold commemorations every year, both in memory of those who died and to ensure that this genocide, in which six million Jews and five million others were killed, is not forgotten.

Friday – April 20, 2012 – 7:30 PM
Healdsburg Community Church
Free admission

The much sought-after Enso String Quartet will present Russian River Chamber Music’s 2011-12 season finale concert on Friday, April 20, 7:30 p.m. at Healdsburg Community Church (1100 University Street). The concert will be preceded at 7:00 by an informal interview with members of the quartet and RRCM artistic director Gary McLaughlin.

Founded in 1999 at Yale University and now based in New York City, the Enso Quartet has quickly emerged as one of the country’s most accomplished young ensembles. They are recipients of two Grammy nominations— the most recent in 2010 for “Best Chamber Music Performance” (Naxos, works of Ginastera). International critics claim the quartet’s “jaw-dropping prowess” and “edge-of-the-seat vitality.”

The Quartet will perform a wonderfully diverse program of works by Boccherini (Quartet in G minor, Op. 32 No. 5), Benjamin Britten (String Quartet No. 2), and Edvard Grieg (Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 27). ADMISSION IS FREE with donations gladly accepted.

The ensemble’s name, Enso, derives from the Japanese Zen painting of the circle which represents perfection and imperfection, the moment of chaos that is creation, the emptiness of the void, the endless circle of life, and fullness of the spirit.

Following the performance will be a gala reception for the artists and RRCM members at Just For You Gallery on the Healdsburg Plaza featuring local wines, noshes, and a celebratory nod to RRCM’s achievement of presenting 20 seasons of top-flight chamber music performances for North Bay audiences.

Storytelling???

NOT, Fairy Tales, Folklore, Myths, Legends, not even Bedtime Stories nothing wrong with that except, THAT'S NOT WHAT WE DO!

West Side Stories is where everyday people drop their name in the hat, to tell Five Minute, True Stories, Live on Stage, Without Notes, 10 get pulled and when it's all over a random audience member chooses their favorite and that teller wins $50.

That's how we do it, it's what's called a StorySlam!

It sort of feels like sitting around a campfire with a bunch of friends, everybody telling stories. (the only things missing are you, the smores, and an actual fire) There’s no other show like it in Northern California.

Come see what everybody's talking about, the 2nd Wednesday every month. You’ll need to get to this hot monthly event early to get a good seat - we have been jam-packed and tickets are only $5 cash at the door.

Call 707-477-4416 for more information

Practice your story once or twice, sign-ups are at 7pm and don't fear because we're all in this together.

We put on this show because we love it, but it can't be done with out help, so a special thanks to our sponsors Pelican Art Gallery, Petaluma Community Access and our newest one Electric Crayon.
<itunes:summary>West Side Stories in Petaluma

Here are the monthly themes for 2012 so you can get a head start:

April 11th CRIME DOESN’T PAY
May 9th MY HERO
June 13th IT JUST SEEMS LOGICAL

Pelican Art Gallery provides a stage, a microphone, & a theme for evening, a lively supportive audience, & Dave Pokorny to host & guide the festivities.

Every 2nd Wednesday of the month - 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Pelican Art Gallery & Custom Framing Studio
143 Petaluma Blvd. North - Petaluma, CA
Phone: (707) 477-4416

March 31st, 8:00pm
Occidental Center for the Arts
Since performing for us in 1994, this quartet has grown in maturity and depth, as well as creating additional appeal for listeners by going digital. Their original idea to record every live performance so as to make it accessible to audiences after the fact, not only allowed for specific memories to be held, but as an acute tool for improvement in the ensemble. In addition, by incorporating four lap top computers into their performance, all of which hold their sheet music, they can project the actual four part score, in the composer’s handwriting, to be viewed by the audience. This is a special multimedia experience for our audience, with our small venue.
Written by Tennessee Williams and co-conceived by Craig A. Miller and Lennie Dean
Directed by Lennie Dean
In this new visit with the female characters of one of America's greatest playwrights we see glimpses into William's own life as a son to a single mother and brother to a mentally disabled sister, and how some of his early women in his one act plays went on to mature into the most powerful matriarchs, sexually repressed ingenues, and tragic female victims of the American stage; now populating his better-known works such as The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, Summer and Smoke, and more. Co-conceived by Artistic Director, Craig A. Miller, and company Dramaturge, Lennie Dean, this evening is sure to be a perfect companion to our G. K. Hardt production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

What is a CASA?

Volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) are everyday people who are trained and then appointed by judges to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. When a CASA volunteer is appointed to a child's case, he or she spends time with the social workers, foster parents, family, and most importantly- the child. The advocate then provides the judge with information that assists in providing a unique and heartfelt understanding of the child's needs. A CASA volunteer remains with each child until they are placed in a safe, permanent and nurturing home.

Renew hope in a child. Consider volunteering today.

CASA Training

After acceptance into the CASA program, the child advocate completes 24 hours of a comprehensive training program taught by the CASA Advisory Committee. There are additional hours of internship including site visits for courtroom observation and case reviews. Continuing education training of at least 12 hours per year is required for all CASA's.

In completing the CASA training program, you will:

- Gain practical knowledge of your roles and responsibilities as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).
- Examine major issues related to your work as a CASA.
- Practice the skills required for a CASA.
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. How Can I Participate?

The Big Read, Sonoma County is inviting teachers, students, seniors, arts and community organizations, private business, public entities, and other individuals or groups with an interest in supporting literacy and the promotion of reading as a pleasurable activity to participate in The Big Read, Sonoma County by creating their own event or project. Events must take place during March 2012 and can be for one day or a series of days, serve public or private groups, focusing on any age or demographic. Projects (art, theatrical, musical) are encouraged (especially by classroom teachers) in order to engage “reluctant readers.”
You can help link Sebastopol and Petaluma for bikes, peds, and horses!

Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition is working with citizens in Sebastopol and Petaluma to support an exciting new multi-use trail project, and we need your help!

Sonoma County Regional Parks has identified the planned Petaluma Sebastopol Trail as a priority, and is moving ahead with the project. At this time, Regional Parks is preparing to submit through CalTrans a $190,000 grant proposal that would fund a required feasibility study. Once the study is completed, the Petaluma Sebastopol Trail will be eligible to receive federal and state funds toward construction.

Imagine, a Class I (off the road, paved) multi-use pathway connecting Petaluma and Sebastopol. It'll add a safe route for transportation and recreation currently lacking in our local bicycle network. The path is planned to link up in Sebastopol with the Joe Rodota Trail -- that means a continues bike route between Santa Rosa and Petaluma; the connection to the West County Trail means a bikeway from Petaluma to Forestville. Awesome!

Sonoma County Bicycle Coaltion is so excited about this trail, that we're working with Sebastopol TrailMakers, BikeWalk Sebastopol, and citizens in Petaluma to raise the $19,000 match required by the Cal Trans grant. We've already raised nearly $10,000 toward this goal.

Here's your chance to help build a trail!

Between February 1st and March 15, 2012, we need to raise $9,000 to complete the matching fund from individuals like you, who understand what this trail will mean for us in the near future and generations to come: the potential for reduced traffic and greenhouse gas emissions, improved public health, safer routes to school, and more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Will you help build this trail by making a tax-deductible contribution? As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization (Tax ID #: 68-0467440), Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition is receiving and acknowledging donations for this matching fund.

It's easy to donate online, here on SCBC's website: http://www.bikesonoma.org/donatePStrail

Or, download the flyer below, complete the donation form, and send it with your check by March 15, 2012 to: Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, PO Box 3088, Santa Rosa, CA 95402.
SAFE California Act - Death Penalty Initiative

About the SAFE California Act

The SAFE California Act will replace California’s death penalty with life in prison with no chance of parole. This means convicted killers will remain behind bars forever and it will eliminate the risk of executing an innocent person.

Innocence: Since reinstatement of the death penalty in the U.S., 139 innocent men and women have been freed from death row.

Safety & Accountability: Our limited law enforcement resources should be used to solve more crimes, get more criminals off our streets and to protect our families.

Unsolved Rapes & Murders: In an average year in California, over one thousand homicides go unsolved - 46% of homicide cases are never closed - and 56% of rapes go unsolved.

Savings: By replacing the death penalty with life in prison without possibility of parole, California taxpayers would save well over $ 100 million every year

Our Broken System For many people it is puzzling to learn that death row inmates are more likely to die of old age or infirmity than to be executed. But there are important reasons why that is the case.

Families of Murder Victims Justice requires accountability to survivors of murder victims. We must ensure that every survivor of a murder victim is treated with respect and gets the justice they deserve.
