57th Annual Chicken Teriyaki and Bazaar – June 26, 2011

Mouthful welcomes Reverend Carol Himaka and Martin Shimizu of Sebastopol’s Enmanji Buddhist Temple, along with additional guests involved in the upcoming 57th annual Chicken Teriyaki and Bazaar, taking place on July 10. For six decades, Japanese-Americans, their families, their friends and their neighbors have been coming from all over the Bay Area to attend one of summer’s most enduring fetes.

Mr. Shimizu has been a member of the temple since it was founded in 1934, when he was 6 years old. He’ll discuss the history of the temple, including how it was saved from vandals and arsonist during World War II. Reverend Himaka will discuss the religious community and the history of building the temple and other guests will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the extensive preparations that go into making thousands of teriyaki dinners, each one delicious.
