Maps of Fire Danger May Need Rewriting – Nov 2, 2017

With an estimated $3.3 billion in damages from the North Bay Fires, maps that control building codes may need to be rewritten.

The record-breaking destruction of the North Bay fires has many experts questioning the way California determines fire risk. It seems clear that stricter building codes will be required in high-risk areas, but some say the current risk designations are outdated and need re-mapping. Penny Nelson, host of KQED’s The California Report, recently discussed the issue with KQED Science reporter Lauren Sommer.
