Attorney Karlene Navarro Appointed as New Head of Watchdog Office Responsible for Auditing Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department, Part 2 – April 10, 2019

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department has a new independent auditor, responsible for reviewing misconduct records.

We’re continuing our conversation with Karlene Navarro – the new director of Sonoma County’s Independent Office of Law Enforcement Review and Outreach (IOLERO). Navarro started the position on March 12th and is responsible for auditing misconduct records at the Sheriff’s Department. In this part of the interview, KRCB’s Adia White asks Navarro about a new police transparency law that requires agencies to release public records, such as body camera video or internal investigation files.  Last week, Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick agreed to begin releasing these records. Several other agencies, including the Santa Rosa Police Department are resisting releasing documents dated prior to January 1st when the law went into effect.
