Winter Storms Bring Millions in Damage to Local Roads – March 13, 2017

This winter’s storms not only brought heavy rain and wind, but also a hefty amount of repairs to Sonoma County’s roads.

Sonoma County’s roads have taken a severe beating from this winter’s nonstop storms. Now the county’s Department of Transportation and Public Works is out with an initial estimate of over 16-million dollars worth of damages. KRCB’s Tiffany Camhi reports.

Project Drawdown Solutions – April 18, 2017

We already know how to undo global warming, argues the new book, Drawdown. We just have to do more. Of everything.

In agriculture, building, urban design transportation, energy production and use and more, there are steps already being taken to keep carbon out of the atmosphere. And according to a serious new book, scaling up those actions—all of them—could be a pathway to reversing global warming.

Wet Winter is Bad News for Tomales Bay Oysters – April 13, 2017

For most farmers more rain means more growth, but for Tomales Bay oyster farmers it’s the opposite.

The winter storms that drenched Northern California and brought much of the state out of the drought have been a good thing for most of us. But for oyster farmers in Tomales Bay…lots of rain means lots of closures. KRCB’s Tiffany Camhi visited one oyster company to check on the health of their oysters and their business.

Project Drawdown – April 17, 2017

Instead of slowing down climate change, Paul Hawken wants to reverse it. Drawdown,” the new book he edited, offers a plan to do that.

“Drawdown” is the term used to describe the time when greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have peaked and then begin to decline. A new book offers a pathway to get there by 2050.

Reverse Racism – April 12, 2017

“Reverse racism” isn’t really a thing. But it still needs to be debunked.

Whether its unconscious or overt, racism remains a sensitive issue in America. But the idea of “reverse racism” isn’t an inversion of that—it’s an example. A free public gathering to examine and debunk that idea is happening in Santa Rosa tonight. Bruce Robinson has an advance look.

Shift Sonoma County Aims to Cut Traffic Congestion – April 11, 2017

Car-sharing is coming to Santa Rosa, possibly as soon as this summer as part of a program called Shift Sonoma County.

Curing traffic congestion means using fewer vehicles to move a growing number of people. Sonoma County is preparing to test some strategies to do that, as Christian Kallen reports.

The deadline for submitting proposals for the county’s car-sharing pilot program was last Friday. Interviews with the most promising applicants will be held later this month. Health Partnerships Aid First-Time Mothers – April 10, 2017

The Nurse-Family Partnership helps first time mothers have a successful pregnancy and birth—but it doesn’t stop there.

The months from pregnancy through infancy are critical for both mothers and newborns, and can shape the course of the child’s life into adulthood. It can be a critical time for a little constructive guidance, which is provided by a low-profile, but impactful county program.

The Nurse-Family Partnership program originated in Denver and is now being used all across the county. Right now it is serving about 10% of the eligible households in Sonoma County.
