Marc Katano Studio Tour

Join us for a studio tour with Marc Katano as he personally shows us his paintings and talks about his artistic process and inspiration. Katano’s paintings are about mark making and may remind the viewer of the visual language of Japanese kanji, based on Chinese characters. Katano expands his meditative practice of painting by scaling his work beyond the human body.
The organic nature of the some of these gestural paintings is accentuated by the use of handmade paper. The presence of soft rag is relegated to the outermost edges exposing the paper pulp, but the predominate surface area is dense and textured. Though purely an abstract configuration, the handmade paper delivers a coarse and mountainous landscape where the ink and paint pool and seep in wide crevasses.
Marc Katano was born in Tokyo. In 2010, Katano and his wife, the photographer Nicole Katano, moved their home from Los Angeles to Sonoma. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts with Distinction from California College of the Arts in Oakland, California in 1975. He has had 44 solo exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. His work has been exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, the Achenbach Foundation at the Legion of Honor, San Francisco, the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, and the Honolulu Museum of Art at First Hawaiian Center
