Occidental Center for the Arts is pleased to welcome back to our artistic community renowned singer/songwriter/teacher/feminist/social change activist Holly Near! This special concert is titled An Evening with Holly Near, accompanied by Tammy Hall (piano) and Jan Martinelli (bass). Respected around the world for her music and her activism, Holly Near has been singing for our lives for over 45 years.

Tammy Hall is a remarkable force on keyboards. Her ability to cover a broad range of style brings beautiful texture to the material, allowing Holly to move seamlessly through folk, jazz, and theatrical interpretations of the music.

Jan Martinelli has played bass with Holly since the early nineties, both on recordings and on tour. She is fiercely rhythmic as well as having a lyrical quality well suited to Holly’s repertoire. Jan is part of Wild Mango, a women’s Latin band that moves from merengue to bolero to samba to funk with rich undertones of Middle Eastern spice.

Hiroya Tsukamoto is a one-of-a-kind composer, guitarist and singer/songwriter originally from Kyoto, Japan. He began playing banjo when he was thirteen years old, then the guitar, winning a scholarship to Berklee School of Music in 2000.

Appearing on the OCA stage for the third time, this talented young composer with multi-cultural influences is playing acoustic solo guitar and singing both Japanese folk songs and his own unique compositions with English translations. He delivers skillful and innovative guitar instrumental solos; his soothing vocals impart a mood of peace and tranquility that will transport and enchant you. Don’t miss this amazing talent on stage at O.C.A.’s acoustic sweet spot!
