John Harte, Professor of Ecosystem Sciences, at University of California at Berkeley, will discuss “Can Civilization Endure?” He will review the major threats to a sustainable future, critique some recently proposed solutions, and describe an achievable course of action to ensure civilization’s survival.

Professor Harte is a physicist turned ecologist. His research focuses on the effects of human actions on, and the linkages among, biodiversity, ecosystem structure and function, and climate. An overarching goal of his research is to understand the interdependence of human well-being and the health of ecosystems. He has won numerous awards and honors as an ecologist and an established environmental scientist and author including a Pew Scholars Prize in Conservation and the Environment, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Leo Szilard prize from the American Physical Society, the UC Berkeley Graduate Mentorship Award, a Miller Professorship, and a George Polk award in investigative journalism. He has served on six National Academy of Sciences Committees and has authored over 200 scientific publications, including eight books, on topics including biodiversity, climate change, biogeochemisty, and energy and water resources.
