Buried Child is a gothic tale of family secrets and lost inheritance. With epic themes, the play is shot through with hilarious comic moments delivering an entertaining and profound evening of theater. This winner of 1979 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Grandpa Dodge (John Craven), the family patriarch, is on his last leg. He wheezes in front of a flickering TV, sneaking sips of whiskey, listening to his unseen wife Halie (Laura Jorgensen) rattle on as she dresses for a lunch date with the local preacher (Dwayne Stincelli). The couple once tended a successful mid-western farm that produced a bounty of harvest, including three strapping sons. However, on this rainy night when grandson, Vincent (Sam Coughlin), and his girlfriend, Shelly (Ivy Rose Miller) arrive unannounced, it becomes quite clear something is very wrong in this house. No one recognizes Vincent, not even his father Tilden (Keith Baker), who is mysteriously bringing in vegetables from a field that has been fallow for years; nor his menacing uncle Bradley (Eric Burke), who once sawed his leg off with a chainsaw. Throughout the night, as these vividly bizarre characters encounter one another, we come to suspect that this family’s deep, dark secret, buried for twenty years, is about to be unearthed. Humor and pathos abound in this masterwork of modern drama, a tribute to the late Sam Shepard who died of ALS on July 27, 2017 at age 73 on his farm in Midway, Kentucky.
