The Spirit of Us: A Musical History from Africa to Hip Hop
Museums of Sonoma County
Saturday, February 23rd, 2019 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

The Museum of Sonoma County is proud to present “The Spirit of Us,” in honor of Black History Month. The program is produced and performed by Legacy Showcases, which presents enriching and educational productions in honor of the slave:

“Despite our brutal origin in the Americas, our hope for redemption endures, its heartbeat pulsating through the rhythm of our music. Stemming from a blend of West African and European Christian persuasions, our soulful and deeply expressive musical style is unmatched. Whether conveying sorrows and covert protests while working in the fields, weeping and wailing to God for our souls’ deliverance, or revealing secret traveling codes and instructions for The Underground Railroad, music has served a vital and functional purpose for every aspect in the lives of the African slave. From Negro spirituals to Gospel, songs of sorrow to blues, Jubilee to Jazz, protest to Freedom, and folktale to Rap and Hip Hop, music continues to reveal our spirit of freedom, redemption, and hopeā€¦.”

Doors open at 7 p.m., the performance begins at 7:30 p.m.
