Redwood Arts opens its 40th season with a favorite in his fourth appearance: the internationally renowned guitarist Paul Galbraith. Mr. Galbraith plays a unique 8-string guitar, which departs from the established format through an asymmetrical stringing design borrowed from the lute family.  It was named the ‘Brahms Guitar’ for its richness of sound and wide range.  It has a cello-like endpin that Paul rests on a box to enhance the projection of instrument’s rich sound.  On this instrument, Paul has recorded a series of highly acclaimed albums, starting with the music of Brahms piano variations, and continuing with a Haydn Sonata; ‘French Impressions’, with music by Debussy & Ravel; Britten’s famous Nocturnal for guitar; and Bach’s Sonatas & Partitas which was nominated for a Grammy award. His latest CD, Allemande, was released in 2017.

Paul was born in Scotland and grew up studying guitar and piano in England.  He began concertizing in his late teens after coming to public attention in Great Britain though a series of televised competition successes.  As a 17-year-old, Paul entered the Leeds Castle Segovia competition which was attended by its namesake.  After Paul played and was awarded the silver medal, André Segovia made a prescient prediction, “Paul is magnificent.  He will be a great artist.”  Since the early nineties, Paul has toured the USA annually, and performed extensively in the UK and the European Union, as well as in Russia, South America, India, China and Australia.  The orchestra and ensembles he has played with include the Santa Rosa Symphony (Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez), the BBC Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, the St. Petersburg Quartet, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. In one concert, he played for Queen Elizabeth.
