Comedy Cabaret – February 8, 2018

Comedy Cabaret: Sandy & Richard Riccardi!
Occidental Center for the Arts
Sunday, February 11th, 2018 @ 4:00 pm

OCA is pleased to host an afternoon-almost-Valentine’s-Day Cabaret featuring the popular comedy cabaret duo of Sandy Riccardi (vocals) and Richard Riccardi (piano and vocals). This talented and clever couple combine ‘tastefully raunchy’ original comedy songs with progressive political parody- plus expert musicianship – to charm your socks off …maybe more! With over 35 million views on social media, the Riccardis have been dubbed “ My new favorite singing songwriting team!!!” by Rosie O’Donnell. Their political hits e.g. ‘Covfefe’ and ‘Boy from Mar-A-Lago’ leave no doubt as to their persuasion, while their intelligent and sexy comedy songs, beautifully sung and delivered about New Age (‘Tinder-ly’) and Older Age love and life will leave you roaring with laughter and/or tears.

Richard Riccardi has played for such greats as Joel Grey, Martha Raye, Diahann Carroll, Tom Jones, Wesla Whitfield and Mel Torme; as well as numerous Broadway tours. He frequently records at Skywalker Ranch for movies and video games, and it is entirely possible he’s the guy playing piano on your ringtones. Sandy spent 11 years in NYC doing musical theater and light opera with NY Gilbert and Sullivan Players, Westchester Broadway Theater, and many more. www.partyriccardi.com

The topic for our February events will be: “Rhetoric of Images”

Everyone has a story to tell …

Join Inese Heinzel, MA, educator and media producer, in this interactive multimedia seminar and learn how to create a compelling visual memoir drawn from your own life or of someone you love …

Discover how you can Show, not Tell, your story.

Visual memoir is a story based on the evocative power of images, arguably the most potent trigger of memory and emotion. Images—culled from photo albums, journals, personal mementos and other sources—will form the foundation of your story and the basis of your descriptive text. You’ll learn how to:

• Choose a personal yet relatable topic for your story
• Write a short script
• Create a storyboard
• Select, prepare and organize the best photos to drive your story

Whether you decide to post or publish your memoir on social media, or simply save it as a family keepsake, what you will take away from this seminar will make it memorable.

Equus – February 5, 2018

Equus
6th Street Playhouse
February 9th – 25th, 2018

Dr. Dysart, a psychiatrist, is confronted with Alan Strang, a boy who has blinded six horses in a violent fit of passion. This very passion is as foreign to Dysart as the act itself. To the boy’s parents it is a hideous mystery; Alan has always adored horses. To Dysart it is a psychological puzzle that leads both doctor and patient to a complex and disturbingly dramatic confrontation. Part detective story and part psychological thriller, this international success reached new acclaim on Broadway when revived in 2008, starring Daniel Radcliffe, and now comes to the 6th Street Playhouse Studio Theatre.

South Pacific – February 2, 2018

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific
Spreckels Performing Arts Center
February 9th – 25th, 2018

Set in an island paradise during World War II, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific brings the themes of romance, duty, and prejudice to create a classic story that still rings true today. Both heartbreaking, and thought-provoking the musical follows two intercultural love stories: Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with Emile, a French plantation owner and U.S. Lieutenant Cable who falls for a beautiful island native named Liat. Both Americans find themselves struggling to reconcile their own cultural prejudices with their amorous feelings, all the while under the dark cloud of a war that is coming ever closer to their island paradise.

Give Kids A Smile Day – February 1, 2018

Give Kids A Smile Day
Various Sonoma County Locations
February 2nd & 3rd, 2018

Join us for Give Kids a Day 2018 on February 2nd and 3rd from 9am to 4pm at various locations. Free dental exams and treatment for children age 0 to 18 provided through a public/private partnership between public dental clinics and private dentists.

Pre-Registration is required. Call (707) 535-3302 to register.

Since 2005, GKASD, a program of Community Action Partnership, has been serving the dental needs of the underserved children of Sonoma County. In the past ten years, GKASD has provided dental services to over 5,000 children who would not have otherwise had access to care.

2016 marked the 12th year of GKASD in Sonoma County! Ten different clinics and private dental offices participated in the event. During the two-day event, 442 children received exams, cleanings, and fluoride treatments. Last year, our chairperson was selected to visit ADA headquarters in Chicago, IL as part of a national Give Kids A Smile Advisory Board to work on implementing improvements and changes to the national GKAS program and in helping improve the branding and marketing of GKAS on a national level.

Additionally, we received a “Gold Resolution” from the Department of Public Health with the County of Sonoma in recognition of the positive impact of our work in the community. The Resolution was presented to Stacey Stirling, Operations Manager of the St. Joseph’s Dental Clinic, who has been working with the GKAS since its inception in Sonoma County. Present were many prominent members of the dental community such as, State Assemblyman Jim Wood, the President of the Redwood Empire Dental Society, members of the board of Community Action Partnership, and a member of the board of Supervisors.

Now, as we celebrate our 13th Anniversary of GKAS! Day in Sonoma County, we hope to continue to partner with more dental professionals and supporters to help children achieve optimal dental health.

World Wetlands Day – January 30, 2018

Celebrating World Wetlands Day:
Laguna Kayaking Adventure by Anita Smith
Laguna De Santa Rosa
Friday, February 2nd, 2018 @ 9:00 am

In celebration of World Wetlands Day, we’re getting outdoors to experience the Laguna up close and personal, and we’d love to have you join us. Kayaking the Laguna gives us a different perspective of this amazing, dynamic place. We’ll enjoy birding, looking for wildlife, and cruising through the upper canopy of oaks while getting some exercise and fresh air. We’ll also keep our eyes open for trash to pick up so it doesn’t flow out to the Russian River and the ocean.

The Laguna de Santa Rosa is one of 2,289 sites around the world designated as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, an intergovernmental treaty that provides a framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. This year’s theme for World Wetlands Day is “Wetlands for a sustainable urban future: Urban wetlands making cities livable.” We’ll discuss how a healthy Laguna reduces flooding downstream and how our collaborative restoration, conservation, and education work is helping make the Laguna Watershed more resilient. We’ll meet at Heron Hall (hot drinks and light snacks will be provided), and after a brief welcome and overview, head out to explore. We have all the kayaks, life vests, and paddles needed (or you’re welcome to bring your own). Heavy rain or wind cancels, in which case you’d receive a full refund. Group size is limited, so sign up today!

Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Buried Child – January 29, 2018

Buried Child
Main Stage West
February 2nd – 25th, 2018

Written By Sam Sheppard
Directed by Elizabeth Craven

Buried Child is a gothic tale of family secrets and lost inheritance. With epic themes, the play is shot through with hilarious comic moments delivering an entertaining and profound evening of theater. This winner of 1979 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Grandpa Dodge (John Craven), the family patriarch, is on his last leg. He wheezes in front of a flickering TV, sneaking sips of whiskey, listening to his unseen wife Halie (Laura Jorgensen) rattle on as she dresses for a lunch date with the local preacher (Dwayne Stincelli). The couple once tended a successful mid-western farm that produced a bounty of harvest, including three strapping sons. However, on this rainy night when grandson, Vincent (Sam Coughlin), and his girlfriend, Shelly (Ivy Rose Miller) arrive unannounced, it becomes quite clear something is very wrong in this house. No one recognizes Vincent, not even his father Tilden (Keith Baker), who is mysteriously bringing in vegetables from a field that has been fallow for years; nor his menacing uncle Bradley (Eric Burke), who once sawed his leg off with a chainsaw. Throughout the night, as these vividly bizarre characters encounter one another, we come to suspect that this family’s deep, dark secret, buried for twenty years, is about to be unearthed. Humor and pathos abound in this masterwork of modern drama, a tribute to the late Sam Shepard who died of ALS on July 27, 2017 at age 73 on his farm in Midway, Kentucky.
