The Christian Foley-Beining Group – August 2, 2017

The Christian Foley-Beining Group
Occidental Center for the Arts
Friday, August 4th, 2017 @ 8:00 pm

OCA presents Friday Night Live! The Christian Foley-Beining Group. Foley-Beining, a native of Germany who now lives and works in Healdsburg, was on the faculty of Musicians Institute in Hollywood for eight years and has taught music clinics around the world as well as having played with many well-known musicians. A popular figure in the local jazz scene and also a composer, Christian started the group out of his love for the music of Pat Metheny and the Beatles. In collaboration with bass player Todd Smith they have integrated Metheny’s complex arrangements into their repertoire; as well as Christian’s own jazzy arrangements of Beatles tunes. They were joined by versatile drummer/percussionist Tom Hayashi and the trio has recorded a CD and plays frequently at many fine venues around Sonoma County. https://www.thechristianfoley-beininggroup.com.

Come on down after the FRIDAY FARMER’S MARKET and enjoy this stellar Sonoma County based jazz trio performing their own arrangements of Pat Metheny and Beatles music at OCA’s acoustic sweet spot!

20th Annual Progressive Festival – July 28, 2017

20th Annual Progressive Festival
Walnut Park, Petaluma
Sunday, August 6th, 2017 @ 12:00 – 5:00 pm

The Petaluma Progressives, a social justice advocacy group, is celebrating twenty years of the Progressive Festival. The public is invited to participate and enjoy this unique annual event. Twenty years ago the Progressives envisioned facilitating an annual event that would bring together social justice, environmental, immigrant and workers rights, and community organizations, with informational booths to inform the public.

Over the years the Festival hosted many notable speakers, including Medea Benjamin, Alice Walker, Jim Hightower, Helen Caldicott, Van Jones, Cindy Sheehan, Antonia Juhász, Davey D, Daniel Ellsberg, Jill Stein, Norman Solomon, and many others.

There will be a bit less talk and more performances this year, including Mexican traditional dance by Paquiyollotzin, Petaluma’s award winning Ballet Folklorico group; The French Oak Gypsy Band; progressive musical parody by Sandy & Richard Riccardi; South Indian dance troupe, Kalaikoil; spoken word by Karym Sánchez. A Native American Ceremony will begin the event.

The San Francisco Mime Troupe returns this year with their musical political satire, “Walls.” Visit www.SFMT.org to learn more about the Mime Troupe.

In the spirit of building the resistance movement, a few speakers will address topics close to home in these critical times. The event also offers the opportunity to network with over 50 organizations, and feast on hot vegan and chicken tamales, beans, rice, drinks, and other goodies.

Chautauqua Revue – July 25, 2017

Chautauqua Revue
Occidental Arts & Ecology Center
September 14th – 26th, 2017 at 7:30pm

Come and be part of this 15th annual extravaganza of community celebration. With elements of storytelling, vaudeville, and circus, the Revue is a show like no other. Each year is a unique mix of physical daring, poignant stories, cutting satire, incomparable musicians, and whatever else we find to add to the stew. Laughter gives way to tears, clearing the way for a moment for everyone involved to look around and see that we are all in this together. Anchored by Mistress of Ceremonies Wysteria McBrylcreem, the virtuosic sounds of our stage band Big B and His Cityslickers, and the irreverent interludes of Clowns On A Stick, the Revue is then joined by guest performers from near and far. Get your tickets early as all shows in 2016 sold out well in advance. We’ll see you in the garden!

The Chautauqua Revue has taken place in the OAEC’s North Garden Theater annually since 2003. The show is an homage to the great Chautauquas of a hundred years ago that were week long rural encampments that were a mixture of entertainment and education. Much of the audience for the Revue is now made up of folks who come year after year for an evening not only of quality entertainment, but to be part of the community spirit of the Chautauqua.
