Family Fun Day line-up for 2017
Jack London loved the natural world! Come join us as we celebrate our own connections to nature through these free family events. Geared towards young learners (pre-k-2nd grade), each event will celebrate a different theme, combining natural science, art, and sustainability. While activities and learning levels support young adventurers, kids of all ages are welcome to join us as we explore forest trails and learn about nature through fun hikes, games and hands-on activities.
Most events begin in the Beauty Ranch Meadow and run from 10am-12:30pm. Park entry fee of $10 per vehicle is due at gate but participation in events is free.
Saturday, May 20th, 2017 – Nature’s Recyclers: How does Nature keep the environment healthy and how can humans help? Over 100 years ago, Jack London knew the importance of using eco-friendly materials to grow his crops and take care of the land. At this event, we will take a close look at Nature’s own recycling system and how humans can reduce, reuse, and recycle too! The 45 min. nature walk leaves the meadow at 10:00 am and ends with fun activity stations using recycled materials to play games and make crafts. Meet in Beauty Ranch Meadow.
Saturday, June 10th, 2017 – Talons and Trails: All about adaptations! We will explore the unique body structures and behaviors that help birds survive and thrive in the wild. Start by meeting real live raptors up close at an exciting presentation from the experts at the Santa Rosa Bird Rescue Center. Following this, we will take walk to the Wolf House Ruins and investigate birds in the forest and play learning games. Raptor presentation begins at 10:00 am and hike immediately follows. Meet at the House of Happy Walls Museum.
Saturday, August 12th, 2017 – Nature’s Palette: Did you know that Nature uses color to communicate? This event takes a fun look at the roles of color and pattern in the plant and animal kingdoms. Through trail activities and fun games, we will learn about this science on a nature walk and then switch to a fun discussion on how humans like to use color. The walk leaves at 10:00am and ends back in the meadow at an outdoor art studio, where kids can create water color paintings from the inspiration they gathered along the trail. Meet in Beauty Ranch Meadow.
Saturday, October 14th, 2017 – Fall in the Forest: This journey is an exploration on how animals use their 5 senses to survive the seasonal changes from fall to winter. By visiting several learning stations focused on the senses, we will learn about how forest animals adjust to the changing weather and prepare themselves for the coming winter. Nature walk leaves at 10:00am and ends with craft and activity stations in the meadow. Meet in Beauty Ranch Meadow.
