North Bay Suicide Prevention Hotline – August 21, 2017

North Bay Suicide Prevention Hotline
Ongoing Volunteer Recruitment

Listening can save lives! Volunteer at the Suicide Prevention Hotline!

The North Bay Suicide Prevention hotline is a toll-free, confidential 24/7 suicide prevention hotline (1-855-587-6373). The hotline is part of the North Bay Suicide Prevention Program and serves Marin, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino Counties. It is operated by Buckelew Programs, in partnership with its primary funders, the Marin, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino County Mental Health Departments.
The North Bay Suicide Prevention Program was made possible through funding from CALMHSA and the Mental Health Services Act (Prop 63).

Volunteers are needed!

Volunteers are vital to our 24/7 service. To volunteer on our Hotline, individuals must successfully complete our Hotline Training Class, which includes information on the following topics: identifying individuals in suicidal or other types of crisis; communication; counseling; active listening skills; and suicide/crisis intervention techniques and other subjects.

The 40-hour training classes are held in San Rafael for six weeks on Tuesday nights from 7:00 – 10:00 pm with one all-day Saturday class. For those becoming volunteers there are four additional Tuesday nights, 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Classes are held in February, May, and September of each year.

The next six-week training starts September 12th.

Bodega Bay Art and Seafood Festival – August 18, 2017

Bodega Bay Art and Seafood Festival
Watts Ranch, Bodega
August 26th & 27th, 2017

Held on a rugged, rural ranch, a few miles inland from the spectacular Sonoma Coast, the Bodega Seafood, Art & Wine Festival is both sophisticated and down-home. This annual benefit attracts thousands of foodies, art aficionados, wine and beer connoisseurs and music lovers to picturesque Watts Ranch in the village where Alfred Hitchcock once filmed his classic thriller, “The Birds.”

Seafood:
For seafood lovers, there’s barbecued oysters, crab cakes, Key Lime calamari, fish tacos, albacore wrapped in bacon, grilled salmon and fish and chips. For non-seafood eaters there’s plenty of meat, chicken and vegetarian options, as well as delicious sweet treats.

Food is also available from various individual vendors.

Wine and Microbrew Beer Tasting:
This is always a huge draw with over 30 wineries and 25 microbreweries. This year cider companies are included. The tasting is a wonderful mix of known companies, as well as many small boutique wineries and up and coming breweries. Previous participants, such as Alexander Valley, Cline Cellars, Jacuzzi Family, Korbel, Frey Vineyards, Lagunitas, Lost Coast Brewery, Bear Republic, Sierra Nevada, and Northcoast, to name small handful, will be joined by many newcomers to our tasting.

Art Show and Sale:
The quality of the art and fine craft is unrivaled in Sonoma County and beyond. This juried show attracts artisans from throughout California and other parts of the country. The festival aims to appeal to a broad range of attendees, by providing a mix of higher end fine art and craft and more moderate ranged craft works. The festival producers are artists themselves, and know the ins and outs of doing shows from both sides, having each traveled to do festivals for over 30 years.

Entertainment:
3 stages of entertainment offering festival goers a full day of musical and non-musical diversion. This year’s Main Stage features the soulful Americana artist David Luning on Saturday, and rocking blues with Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm Kings on Sunday. The stage also features jazz, swing, bluegrass and more, and has a large dance floor. The Wine Stage offers more eclectic musical entertainment. The Entertainment Stage showcases hilarious jugglers, magicians and other non-musical acts.

Family Fun:
This is a family friendly event with jumps, slides and a climbing wall, and face painting, as well as ceramic painting for kids. We have the “color-in giant mural” for all ages. It depicts many favorite photographs shot at the festival over the years which have been converted into black and white images to fill in with washable paints: an art project for all our visitors. Our beneficiary, Stewards of the Coast & Redwoods, have wonderful, interactive, environmental displays for the whole family as well.

A portion of the proceeds from the event supports two vital non-profits: Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods, which works in partnership with the California State Parks in the Russian River/Sonoma Coast region, and the Bodega Volunteer Fire Department.

Out Of The Shadows – August 9, 2017

Out Of The Shadows
Steele Lane Community Center
Friday, August 18th – September 15th, 2017

The art exhibit “Out of the Shadows: A Collection of Transformative Art” opens on Friday, August 18th, 4pm – 8pm, at the Steele Lane Community Center, 415 Steele Lane, Santa Rosa.

The Sonoma County Wellness Art Collaborative is a partnership between Buckelew Programs, Community Support Network, and Telecare Sonoma ACT.The Sonoma County Wellness Art Collaborative is a consortium of community-based mental health service providers committed to promoting the creative work of our member-artists. Many of the folks who we work with engage in creative endeavors but do so within the shadows of our society. It is our aim to bring their creative work out of the shadows to see the light of day.

One of the unfortunate consequences of mental illness is that it often forces the person suffering from its debilitating effects to live on the margins of our society. Through our collective programs, we welcome people back into a community of support after they have undergone major life adversities. We provide an important service for many people’s loved ones after they have exhausted the support of their family and friends, and our work is often unrecognized by the larger community due to the stigma associated with mental illness.

The Sonoma County Wellness Art Collaborative held its first meeting in November of 2016 to begin plans for Out of the Shadows: A Collection of Transformative Art. We began our project without a budget and have raised nearly $5,000 in funding to cover costs associated with hosting our debut event, Out of the Shadows: A Collection of Transformative Art. Preliminary discussions have taken place to expand the efforts of The Collaborative in 2018 to include additional community partners and to sponsor other art-related events that foster community engagement and raise awareness about issues of relevance within Sonoma County.

This event is hosted by the Sonoma County Wellness Art Collaborative.

Admission is free.

Registration required.

Man of La Mancha
September 1st – 24th, 2017
Book by Dale Wasserman, Lyrics by Joe Darion, Music by Mitch Leigh
Mary Chun, Music Director
Elly Lichenstein, Stage Director
Some call Don Quixote a fool. Others call him a lunatic. In his own words: “I hope to add some measure of grace to the world.“

Quartet
October 13th – 29th, 2017
By Ronald Harwood
Jereme Anglin, Director
From the author of The Dresser comes this wicked, funny, joyous play about art, the eccentricities of age, and the celebratory power of the human spirit. In a retirement home for aging musicians, two questions circle each other. One involves former opera stars who were once married, long ago and briefly. The other is about a gala that may be able to raise enough money to keep their home from closing. Will the complications of the first question derail the second?

My Way – A musical tribute to Frank Sinatra
December 15th, 2017 – January 14th, 2018
Created by David Grapes and Todd Olson
Cesar Cancino, Music Director
Sharon Winegar, Stage Director
As Tony Bennet said, “His songs will never sound old-fashioned. He always sang quality song… No matter what year they’d be played in, they would never sound out of date.” We couldn’t agree more, so join us in celebrating the music of the man many call the greatest pop vocalist of the 20th Century. Songs include All of Me, Fly Me to the Moon, I Get a Kick Out of You, I Only Have Eyes for You, I’ll Be Seeing You, It Was a Very Good Year, and The Lady is a Tramp, to name a few.

Margie loses her job and is one Bingo game away from homelessness. She risks all as she tries to find a fresh start. Will Margie’s luck finally change for the better? An insightful comedy of class and culture, darkly funny and surprisingly touching.

Amadeus
March 30th – April 15th, 2018
By Peter Shaffer
Jennifer King, Director
This provocative work weaves a confrontation between mediocrity and genius into a tale of breathtaking dramatic power. Antonio Salieri, master of the mediocre, contemplates his rival, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – why did God bestow genius on such a banal creature?

The Fantasticks
June 8th – 24th, 2018
Book and lyrics by Tom Jones
Music by Harvey Schmidt
Mary Chun, Music Director
Elly Lichenstein, Stage Director
