ART – March 6, 2017

ART
Healdsburg Raven Players
March 9th – 18th, 2017

Serge has just spent $200,000 on an all white painting. When his friends Marc and Yvan come over to admire his purchase, heated discussions ensue, some philosophical, some personal. Friends argue, debate and repeatedly offend each other in this funny, engaging, provocative play.

Since the subject of Art is the subjectivity of art, what better venue than the Paul Mahder Art Gallery? The largest private gallery in northern California surrounds you with stunning contemporary art in an expansive, yet intimate setting.

“There’s no reason to insult each other, especially over a painting!”

Deadhead’s Delight – March 3, 2017

Deadhead’s Delight: Music and Menories of the Grateful Dead
Sonoma County Museum
Thursday, March 9th, 2017 @ 5:30

How fun would it be to be a fly on the wall backstage with the Grateful Dead? Susana Millman was able to be part of the intimate circle around the Grateful Dead as a long-time friend of Jerry Garcia (he walked her down the aisle at her wedding with Dead publicist Dennis McNally). She had unparalleled access and consequently took pictures at family events that were not generally covered. As a result, she wrote the book, Alive with the Dead / A Fly on the Wall with a Camera (2016), which captures the band and its greater organization off-stage and in private events.

Her husband, Dennis McNally, the Dead’s historian (A Long Strange Trip, 2002) and long-time publicist, will conduct an on-stage interview with Susana Millman that reveals how she came to be part of the scene, and the ups and downs of shooting the Grateful Dead. The conversation resembles the book–intimate, affectionate, and revealing.

Live Music:
Dead Again is a Sonoma County-based Grateful Dead tribute band. They’ve played together since February of 2016, rehearsing in bass player Don Pasewark’s garage in Petaluma. Band members include John Bedell (rhythm guitar and vocals); David Dodd (keyboards and vocals); Will Eichert (lead guitar and vocals); Jim Koblick (drums and vocals); and Don Pasewark (bass). They’ve played at the Occidental Arts & Ecology Center, The San Geronimo Community Center, the Mystic Theatre in Petaluma, and at the Big Easy in Petaluma.

The music begins at 5:30pm, the talk begins at 6:30pm.

Books will be available for sale, and the author will be available for signing before and after the talk.

2017 SDFF Peer Pitch West – March 2, 2017

SDFF17: Peer Pitch West
Sebastopol Center for the Arts
Friday, March 24th, 2017 @ 10:00am

Are you a documentary filmmaker with a work-in-progress at any stage of development?

Are you looking for a supportive environment to give your pitch a test run?

Do you want to help support your fellow filmmakers by providing them feedback?

The Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival, in partnership with Docs in Progress and The D-Word present the sixth-annual Peer Pitch West, a project dedicated to extending the craft of documentary filmmaking by giving filmmakers access to creative feedback in a supporting and collaborative environment.

Docs In Progress Executive Director Erica Ginsberg will facilitate the day. She brings a wealth of experience facilitating filmmaker sessions like this back in Washington D.C., so both the pitching filmmakers and the observing audience are in good hands!

Peer Pitch West takes place from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM on Friday, March 24 in the Little Red Hen Dining Room at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts.

The Details
This program will give up to eight documentary filmmakers the opportunity to present new projects to fellow filmmakers for feedback and for all attending to gain valuable insights and new connections which can guide their own filmmaking. Constructive feedback from peers in a nurturing environment will help to identify strengths and areas for improvement in projects. Participants will also develop skills and comfort in verbally describing their projects among peers before trying their pitches out on industry.

Films which have been presented at past Peer Pitch workshops when they were in their early stages have gone on to be funded by major supporters such as Sundance Documentary Fund and ITVS, been accepted into industry pitching opportunities such as IFP’s Independent Film Week, DocsBarcelona, and the HotDocs Forum; and have gone on to play in theaters, festivals, television, and community screenings. Participants have also made connections with other filmmakers which have led to later collaborations. Some of the films which have come through Peer Pitch have included Let the Fire Burn, Slingshot, Kandahar Journals, Sweetheart Deal, Out in the Silence, Deej, Indivisible, The New Woman, The Lost Dream, The Last Song Before the War, and Uranium Drive-In. The following finished films playing at this year’s festival are also alums of the program: Big Sonia, Twice Upon a Time, and The Groove is Not Trivial

Who Can Pitch?
Participation is open to any filmmaker who has a documentary project he or she would like to discuss. Projects may be at any stage of development. Participants will have 10 minutes total to pitch, INCLUDING time to show a trailer or scene if you have one. In the past, experienced filmmakers, first-time filmmakers, and even film students have pitched their docs in progress at Peer Pitch.

The cost to pitch your project is $85 ($80 for SDFF members – membership info available here. Members can request a discount code from Festival Director Randy Hall at randyh AT sebarts DOT org)

Observing As An Active Role
Unlike other pitching programs, observers at Peer Pitch are very involved with the discussion, providing valuable feedback to the pitching filmmakers. More than once, conversations between observers and pitchers evolved into collaborations resulting in projects as well!

The cost to participate as an observer is $55 ($50 for SDFF members – membership info available here. Members can request a discount code from Festival Director Randy Hall at randyh AT sebarts DOT org)

Register Now!
Space is extremely limited! The day is very tightly structured, and we can only accept the first eight pitch projects.

Winter Warmth Survival Gear Drive – February 23, 2017

Winter Warmth Survival Gear Drive
Sonoma County Taskforce for the Homeless
Ongoing

The Task Force for the Homeless Winter Warmth Program serves as a clearinghouse for life-saving survival gear. We’ve distributed warm winter items to homeless service agencies and programs throughout the county every winter since 2006. Thanks to the generosity of the Sonoma County Department of Health Services, we also have a free distribution site for our program.

According to the latest 2016 Point-In-Time Homeless Census & Survey, there were 2,906 homeless people struggling to survive on a single night in January, when most of us were snug in our beds. 1,906 people were unsheltered and 1,000 people were in shelters or transitional housing. Because our shelters are often full and motel vouchers are scarce, many take refuge in cars, under bridges, behind dumpsters and make do out in the cold, wet weather – many without a warm coat, blanket or sleeping bag. Many succumb to illnesses or injuries caused or worsened by exposure to weather and toxins in the environment, and the rigors and dangers of living outdoors. At least 30 homeless people each year die on the streets and in the wooded areas of Sonoma County. And each winter the number of items we distribute increases – from 1,534 items in 2008-09 to 6,814 items in 2015-16.

We accept donations of survival gear year round. We especially need sleeping bags, sleeping mats, tents, tarps, fiber-filled jackets, flashlights, hiking boots, athletic shoes, new or gently used cushioned socks & new underwear.

You can drop them off at our distribution site or our main office by appointment only.
Contact Fawn at 575-4494, or sctfhmls@pacbell.net.

Cash donations also accepted to purchase needed items (e.g. socks, sleeping bags, etc.), or to help pay program costs.
Use PayPal at http://sonomacountyhomeless.org/winter-warmth/

Through dedicated volunteers, service providers and homeless advocates, we’ve distributed warm winter gear to programs and agencies serving veterans, families, farm workers, people dealing with mental illness and people in recovery – many living on the streets or in encampments during the rainy season. Items are also distributed at holiday dinners, clinics, hot meal sites, pantries, shelters, churches and day centers.
