Hopland Research Center in Mendocino Finds Fire Impact Mitigated by Sheep, Prescribed Burns – Aug 8, 2018

The Mendocino complex fire, the biggest in the state’s recorded history, continues to burn, with 49 percent containment. The fire damaged the Hopland Research and Extension Center, with some unexpected results.

Two-thirds of the more than 5,000 acre Hopland Research and Extension Center were scorched in the River Fire last week. Reporter Sarah Reith of KZYX in Mendocino County met with the center’s community educator, Hannah Bird, on Saturday. Bird described why the fire wasn’t as destructive as it could have been.
