SAY Supporters Set for ‘One Cold Night’ – October 31, 2016

Nearly four dozen local leaders will sleep on the street for a night later this month, simulating youth homelessness to help combat it.

The SAY Dream Center opened its doors last spring, and saw its beds for homeless youth filled immediately. Now they are staging an unusual pubic event to call attention to the needs they are working to serve.

Notwithstanding the earthquake that struck downtown Napa a little more than 2 years ago, our state as a whole has been enjoying an overall lull in significant seismic activity. So the California Earthquake Authority is intensifying its calls for homeowners to take protective steps.

Botanical Artists Capture the Diversity of Alcatraz Gardens – October 25, 2016

The biological diversity of the Gardens on Alcatraz has been captured, beautifully, by the region’s botanical artists.

For a dozen years, volunteers have been working diligently to restore the historic gardens on Alcatraz Island. Now the results of those efforts have been documented in a series of details, full-color drawings by dozens of botanical artists.

Life Inside The Beach Boys – October 24, 2016

Founding Beach Boy Mike Love offers an inside view of the group’s often discordant history in his new memoir, Good Vibrations.

It’s been half a century since the Beach Boys were at their peak in the 1960s, yet their music endures and surviving members of the band maintain a busy concert schedule. One of them is founding singer Mike Love, whose new autobiography charts the often rocky history inside the band.

Mike Love was at Copperfield’s books in Petaluma Monday at 7 pm, where he talked about his book with veteran music writer Joel Selvin. Love will return to Sonoma County on Nov 17 when the Beach Boys perform at the Luther Burbank Center in Santa Rosa.

Eighty-five years in 400 pages—with plenty of pictures included. That’s what entrepreneur, philanthropist and music lover Don Green has packed into his newly public memoir.

A public book release celebration of Don Green’s autobiography, including a reading of excerpts, will be held Saturday at 2 pm at the Green Music Center. Coaching Boys Into Men – October 19, 2016

How about some locker room talk that emphasizes respect for women and girls? It’s already happening in some local schools.

A new, targeted effort to combat violence against women is taking hold in an important, if unexpected context: junior high and high school locker rooms.

The YWCA is hosting a screening of the documentary, Audrie and Daisy tomorrow night at 7 at the Rosy in downtown Santa Rosa. The film shows how teens and their families saw their lived upended as the result of some poor decision making on social media.
